Between 1897 and 1917, Kate Cranston opened several tearooms in Glasgow. The Sauchiehall Street tearoom, opened in 1903, was the first one where she used services of Charles Rennie Mackintosh not only for interior design but for the whole project. The main attraction was the richly decorated Room de Luxe.

In 1917 Miss Cranston sold her business and the tearooms became part of Daly's department store. Room de Luxe remained in use as the department store tearoom until 1980s.

In 1984 Anne Mulhern reopened Room de Luxe recreated to its original glory and in 1996 she reopened the recreated gallery. For her merit in the Willow Tea Rooms restoration she was invited to become one of the founding members of the Guild of Tea Rooms.

During our visit, the ground floor was occupied by a jewellery store going out of business but the tearoom at the gallery was very nice and comfortable. The tea menu includes many loose leaf teas (personally we tried Ceylon and Assam and liked them) and light snacks are also available (our choice was the baked potato with haggis).
