The Scots Presbyterian Church in Fremantle had it's beginnings in 1886 with the arrival of Reverend Robert Hanlin form Scotland. Hanlin had been commissioned by the Free Church of Scotland to work in Western Australia. By 1888 he reported a strong feeling in the church community for a place of worship, consequently funds were raised and in 1890 Scots Presbyterian Church was built.
The church was designed by Perth architect Sir J. J. Talbot Hobbs (1864-1938) and built by Petrie & Sons in 1890. It is a gothic style church constructed from limestone with decorative red brick quoins on the buttresses. The arches around the yellow doors and the numerous lancet windows are also in distinctive red brick. The large square tower with an octagonal steeple is another dominant feature of the church’s neo-gothic architecture.
