Like many cities in the world this is a scheme where it’s possible to hire cycles for short periods from a number of locations. The bike can be returned to any valid location rather than the place it was hired from.

This scheme has all the necessary electronics and gps systems on the bike itself rather than having it built into the docking stations. This has reduced the cost of the system and the company that designed it is hoping to sell it to other cities.

It was originally introduced for Newcastle University students but in 2011 was opened for use by anyone.

You have to register with the company online first and then from then on the bike is hired using a mobile phone text message to get a code to unlock the bike. When you return the bike a second text is sent to inform where the bike has been returned to and to stop the charges.
