His larger horse, "Rain-in-the-Face," drowned in the confusion of landing in San Juan. A tribute to Roosevelt is inscribed on a bronze plaque at its base on the north side.
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States from 1901-1909. He was Vice President for only six months when President William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901. Millions of Americans affectionately called him "Teddy" or "T.R."
