The Painting:-
This painting is located in Cardiff City Hall at the north end of the Marble Hall, near the Assembly Room. The work was presented to Cardiff Corporation by the Rt. Hon Lord Rhondda of Llanwern, upon whom the freedom of the City was simultaneously bestowed. This large and impressive painting by the Welsh artist Margaret Lindsay Williams, born in Cardiff in 1888, shows the ceremony taking place in the Marble Hall in 1916.
David Lloyd George, later the Prime Minister, but at that time Secretary of State for War, stands at the centre of the painting. Lord Rhondda and his wife, who presented the sculptures, are seen to the right. The Council and other Welsh dignitaries are also portrayed in this spectacular painting. The artist died in London in 1960.
The View:-
The artist painted this painting from within a meter or so of where the painting now stands. Therefore to see the Marble Hall as it presently looks just swivel around and face to the South.
Just to the left and the right of the view are all the sculptures that have been added over the years. Ahead or you are some newly added paintings including one of Princess Diana.
Viewing:-
The City Hall is open to the public on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Just ask at reception if it is OK to wander around and have a look at the sculptures. Access if free. If there is an event being held in the City Hall then access may be restricted.

The Artist:
Margaret Lindsay Williams (1888–1960) was a Welsh artist who was commissioned to paint portraits of royalty and American presidents.
She was born in Cardiff, the elder of two daughters of Samuel A. Williams, a shipbroker of Barry Docks. For some years, from the age of 9, she lived in 9 Windsor Road, Barry. She always regarded Barry as her home, despite her work taking her to London. Her funeral took place in Windsor Road Congregational Church and she is buried in Barry Cemetery.
She is best known as a portrait painter and was commissioned to paint portraits of Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, at least five portraits of the present Queen Elizabeth II, President Warren Harding, Henry Ford, and Field Marshal Slim.
Margaret Lindsay Williams was commemorated at an event in Barry Memorial Hall on Saturday 21 November 2009, when Pride In Barry announced it was placing a Blue Plaque on 9 Windsor Road.
