This is one of those magical roads where history just pops and comes alive. Every hundred or so feet, one would be compelled to pull over and look at a statue, a monument or beautiful memorial from one of the regiments that fought here at Gettysburg. Gettysburg of course was the site of the most significant battles of the Civil War and the final turning point of the Union army to oust the Rebel forces of the southern states. The vistas are green, endless and thought-inspiring. US 15 enters Pennsylvania south of Gettysburg, Adams County, from Frederick County, Maryland, on a freeway alignment. The route heads to the north and bypasses Gettysburg, where the route interchanges with US 30. This Route 30 is the Lincoln Highway which also has the absolute best of what Gettysburg has to offer.

The announcement of the byway addition was a big deal for the area's tourism endeavors. Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E said, "Designating routes as byways helps draw more attention to culture-rich, scenic parts of state roadways," Biehler said. "This byway traces an area important not only to Pennsylvania's history, but also to the nation’s heritage." SOURCE The byway designation covers nearly 15 miles of roads passing attractions such as the Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg National Battlefield Park, Lincoln Cemetery and Shriver House Museum.
I am a regular visit to this road. There is way to much to list here or even include in the gallery. Your best bet to prepare is to click to nearest waymarks to enjoy all of the attractions and sites. For further reading please visit HERE, HERE and HERE. To get a quick flavor, literally half a teaspoon, some waymarks to virtually visit now are: the
Birney's Division Monument, the

Peach Orchard and the
Hampton's Battery C and F Penn. Artillery Monument.
From the byway site: The 180-mile Journey Through Hallowed Ground byway corridor from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to Monticello, Virginia, is "Where America Happened." It is said that this three-state route, spanning Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, holds more historic sites than any other in the US. It was an active transportation route during the Revolutionary War, a critical transition zone for the Underground Railroad, and a key battleground during the Civil War. This early corridor was the literal "roadbed" for the creation of our country and American ideals.
