The
Metro system is 77.5 kilometres long in the Tyne and Wear district of the North East of England. It connects the major cities of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Shields which together have a population of about 1 million people. The underground section of the system is 6.1 kilometres long.
The name of this station is taken from a nearby 40 metre high column known as
Greys Monument erected in 1838 to commemorate Earl Grey who whilst he was Prime Minister passed the Great Reform Act in 1832. This act reformed the parliamentary constituencies and increased the number of men entitled to vote in elections.
This entrance to the station is next to the Monumnet shopping centre on Blackett Street rather than the one next to the monument itself.
Necastle and Gateshead are two similar sized rival cities on opposite banks of the River Tyne and this version of the Monopoly Board has locations from both cities.
