Newcastle is situated on the bank of the River Tyne 8.5, miles away from the North Sea. It is in an area near to a number of coal mines and it developed as an industrial city and at one time was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.
During the 20th Century Newcastle declined as an industrial centre and the heavy industry moved out of the area.
In recent times this area of the river bank known as the Quayside underwent a major redevelopment project. As part of this the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation funded a number of pieces of sculpture and public art including this one.
This retaining wall faces the River Tyne and a blue plaque on the wall indicates that it follows the line of the old Medieval town wall.
The work was carved on site and depicts thirty miles of the course of the Tyne. The Tyne is shown as a map with various views from along the river’s course realistically carved to a relief with a maximum depth of a centimetre. Despite the overall length of the work being 30m, it is a subtle intervention into the retaining wall and quayside as a whole.
The subtlety of the carving means the photographs do not really do the piece justice but it is as equally interesting as some of the other nearby large pieces of sculpture.
The co-ordinates are taken from a faded metal plaque with the title of the piece in the middle of the wall.
