The City of Melville is one of the local government authorities that govern the many city councils that make up, collectively, the City of Perth. Melville is just across the Swan River from the CBD. It is one of the areas first settled by the British colonists of the Swan River Colony, it is also one of the older city councils, est. 1900, and contains a plethora of older buildings, cultural sites, and a population of ~100,000. A feature is its location on the Swan River. Boating, and various aquatic activities abound.
This welcome sign is on Canning Highway, a major street, on the northern boundary of the City. The text on the sign is damaged, but still legible. The artwork—waves and oars— is redolent of the Swan River and the importance of the River to Melville.
