The Asteroid
679 Pax has a diameter of 62 metres and a rotation time of approximately 8.5 hours and was discovered by August Kopff on January 28th 1909 at Heidleberg. He was a German astronomer who discovered a total of 68 asteroids between 1904 and 1909.
The Roman Goddess Pax
In Roman mythology,
Pax (in English, Peace), was recognized as a goddess during the rule of Augustus. In Roman art She was depicted with olive branches, a cornucopia and a scepter.
The Carving
The carving is on a bronze panel attached to the side of the granite World War I war memorial erected in 1920 and was designed by By Charles Hardman. It became an English Heritage Grade II listed building on 12th November 1965.
The panel shows peace as an angel looking over a seated woman with a young child in her arms.
