The generators are all that was left of the power plant after the Big Thompson River flash flood of 1976.

A wall of water tore out this power station along with 144 lives on July 31, 1976. The height of the water reached 17 feet above the average 3 foot depth of the river. The county decided to preserve the remains of the power plant to show visitors the strength of the flash flood. The area is now a park with picnic facilities.
