Newcastle is situated on the bank of the River Tyne 8.5, miles away from the North Sea. It is in an area near to a number of coal mines and it developed as an industrial city and at one time was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.
During the 20th Century Newcastle declined as an industrial centre and the heavy industry moved out of the area.
In recent times this area of the river bank known as the Quayside underwent a major redevelopment project.
The area is now popular with joggers and the equipment is ideally placed for anyone who wants to stop and use it.
