Die Erbauung der Wasserburg Venhaus ist für die 1. Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts belegt. Im Jahr 1619 wurde an das Herrenhaus ein Querflügel angebaut, der um 1770 zur heutigen Kirche umgewandelt wurde.
Im Laufe des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wurde die Burg Venhaus zweimal (1623 von Truppen Tillys, 1648 von der schwedischen Armee) zerstört und kurze Zeit später von den neuen Besitzern, die Freiherren von Ripperda, wieder aufgebaut.
