Coordinates were taken on the south bank of Independence Creek at the Kanza Indian site near the bridge.

The waymark is the confluence of Deer Creek and the larger Independence Creek, which flows to the nearby Missouri River.

William Clark named this creek Independence Creek for the date of its discovery by his expedition: the 4th of July 1804.

We know the name of Deer Creek from the you-are-here map of the area by the National Park Service.

This deeply historic place, with both Kanza Indian history and Lewis & Clark sites is one of the 8 wonders of Kansas: (visit link)
