DeSaussure College was built as a residence hall in 1809 and is the second oldest building on the campus of the University of South Carolina. The building was used first by the Confederacy as a hospital and then by the Union. The during the war the building flew a yellow flag signifying a hospital thus saving it from being destroyed by Sherman's forces. The building continues to serve as a resident hall and also as the College of Social Work.
