The cemetery was opened in 1854 after the Burials Act of 1852 – 1857 allowed Burial Boards to be set up either as separate bodies or as part of the Borough Councils. This was in response to rapid expansion of the population in cities during the Industrial Revolution. Local church graveyards could no longer cope with the growth in the number of the burials.
This was especially true of Bradford that had grown from a small town to a large industrial city specialising in the woollen industry, and for a time was known as the wool capital of the world.
The layout of the cemetery in many ways reflects society in Bradford at the time. It houses all levels of society including so called company graves that held multiple internments of paupers who could not afford their own plot. These graves were located on the edge of the cemetery. Moving out from the edge there are many graves with memorials of various sizes reflecting the wealth of the individual families.
The grandest memorials are all grouped together in the middle of the cemetery. Most of these memorials are simply larger and grander than the rest but there also are a few mausolea holding family vaults.
History: This mausoleum holds the remains of the Holden family, who had connections with the wool industry both in Bradford and Lille in France. It was built in 1900 in Greek Revival style, with it's believed with stone imported from Belgium. Above the entrance is a relief carving of two angels and branches of oak and palm leaves.
The cemetery still takes burials but is now run as a charity which cleans and maintains a number of memorials every year. This one was cleaned around 2002.
Visiting Hours/Restrictions: The cemetery is open during daylight hours and the lodge is staffed 9.00 am – 3.00 pm Monday to Friday.
