Algemeen wordt aangenomen dat de oudste handelsbeurs ter wereld in Brugge is ontstaan. Daar werd, ('pars pro toto', het deel overgedragen op het geheel) met de geldbeugel naar het plein 'ter beurse' getrokken, om er handelstransacties te bespreken en af te sluiten. De ernaast gelegen herberg en makelaarswoning kreeg onvermijdelijk de naam 'Ter Beurse' en de eigenaars en uitbaters ervan werden aangeduid als 'die van der Beurse', hetgeen hun vaste familienaam werd. De specifiek Brugse benaming ging over op alle beurzen ter wereld.

It is generally assumed that the oldest trade in the world originated in Bruges. There was, ('synecdoche', the part transferred to the whole) with the purse to the square 'ter Beuze' drawn, to discuss trade and exit. The next door inn and brokers house inevitably got the name 'Ter Beurse' and the owners and operators of these were referred to as 'those of the Beurse', which was their permanent family name. The specific family name Beurze was jused for all exchanges in the world.
