This high flood level mark on the pillar of the Victoria Street Bridge indicates the height of the Whanganui River on May 25, 1904.
However, according to the indicators, the water level in 1940 was 4 feet higher.
According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, the 1904 flood made lower Victoria Street in Whanganui nearly impassable to wheeled traffic – but navigable by rowboat. And according to Wanganui District Council's website, the riverbank was undermined at Taylorsville (Putiki Drive), causing a house and a shop to fall into the river; East Town extensively flooded; Sedgebrook Flat completely under water and water also in Wicksteed Street.
With respect to the 1940 flood, according to Wanganui District Council's website, it is estimated that the river rose 60 feet in its narrow reaches at Pipiriki. Water overflowed the banks above the town bridge and covered Taupo Quay to such a depth that boats could be rowed upon it. Anzac Parade and lower Victoria Avenue were also submerged.
