The British government is acquiring in 1818 the island of St. Helena, until possession of the family Lemoyne. Under the recommendations of the Duke of Wellington, at the time Grand Master of the British artillery, Lieutenant Colonel Elias Walker Durnford military engineer designs a fortified complex on the island. The same nature as the citadel of Quebec, it is essentially a fortress surrounded by a battery of cannons. It consists of a battery (ammunition store), a magazine, an armory and barracks can accommodate up to 274 soldiers. Work began in 1820 and will last four years. The military used until 1870, when the British army calls the island the Canadian government.
This place seems to be what was the cemetery of soldiers and their families the same time.
