This memorial stands in King's Park, to the immediate south-west of the city of Perth. The memorial was dedicated on July 22, 1901 by the Duke and Duchess of York, who had travelled to Australia to open the first Commonwealth of Australia Parliament. This was the first war memorial erected in the Park. It honours Western Australian soldiers killed in the Boer War (1899-1902).

In design, the centre piece is a four sided plinth, with two soldiers on top. One soldier is protecting a wounded comrade on the ground. On the four sides of the plinth are names of fallen soldiers and a dedicatory plaque. In front of the plinth is a field gun.
