The Montreal Stock Exchange (Montreal Exchange) built this building in 1903-1904. In January 1903, after lengthy negotiations with the Sulpicians , the Montreal Stock Exchange acquired the property on St Francis Xavier Street. On this site it was decided to build an building comparable to the major exchanges in the world. To do this the exchange uses American George B. Post as architect, at the same time he was directing the work of the prestigious New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. Two local architects, Edward and William S. Maxwell, were appointed to oversee the project. Architects must also comply with specific instructions: the contract of sale with the Sulpicians is indeed accompanied by a clause that denies any right to purchasers of the Seminar on the gardens at the rear of the property. The openings should be elevated six feet off the ground or filled by a frosted glass.

The first transactions are made on the new floor June 29, 1904. The Montreal Stock Exchange continued its activities on Saint Francis Xavier until October 1966 when he moved into the new Stock Exchange tower in Victoria Square. Throughout this period, little has changed except the addition of one floor on a portion of the south wing of the building. This work may occur in 1928-1929 during the construction of the Montreal Stock Exchange Montreal Curb Market, a building adjoining the south wing of the Old Exchange.

In 1966, the Montreal Exchange left the building. A group then tried converting it into a cultural center. Major redevelopment works was undertaken on the interior, while adding a floor on the north wing of the building. The project falls through, but it comes back to life almost immediately with the rental of the building by the Centaur Theatre. The first season of the company in 1968 and in 1973, it acquired the building. The renovation program begun several years ago is now complete. In 2004, the Centaur Theatre opened its 36th season.
