Der markante, das Stadtbild der Stadt mit prägende Wasserturm entstand in den Jahren 1897 bis 1899 unter Stadtbaurat Ewald Genzmer nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Heinrich Walbe (1865–1954) im Zuge einer Stadterweiterung nach Norden.
Der aus rotem Werkstein und gelben Klinkern errichtete Turm ist architektonisch aufwändig gestaltet und verziert. Der Schaft des runden Turms verjüngt sich nach oben und wird von einem ausladenden Turmobergeschoss bekrönt. Der in Eisenfachwerk ausgeführte Turmkopf ist mit Schiefer gedeckt und wird seinerseits von einer Laterne gekrönt. Die sandsteinernen Meeresungeheuer am Fuß des Bauwerks stammen von den Bildhauern Fr. Guth und Fr. Mänicke.
Der Hochbehälter hatte ein Fassungsvermögen von 1500 m³ und wurde nach einem Prinzip von Otto Intze konstruiert (Intze-2-Behälter). Der Behälter hat einen Durchmesser von 13 m und ist 11 m hoch. Erst nach der Inbetriebnahme des Fernwassernetzes zwischen dem Ostharz und der Elbaue 1965 wurde der Turm funktionslos. 1992 bis 1999 wurde das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Bauwerk saniert.

Der Unterbau des Turms besteht aus rotem Porphyr. der Turm selbst aus gelbem Klinker. Der Wasserbehälter wird von einer Unterkonstruktion aus Stahl getragen.
Der Wasserturm Nord wird nicht mehr für die Trinkwasserversorgung genutzt.

The striking image of the city with the city water tower was influential in the years 1897 to 1899 under Ewald Genzmer city building, designed by the architect Heinrich Walbe (1865-1954) as part of an urban extension to the north.
The built of red stone and yellow brick tower is architecturally designed and elaborately decorated. The shaft of the round tower tapers upwards and is topped by a cantilevered tower upstairs. The executed in iron lattice tower head is covered with slate and is in turn topped by a lantern. The sand stone sea monster at the foot of the building date from the sculptors and Ms. Guth Fri Mänicke.
The elevated tank had a capacity of 1500 m³ and was on a principle of Otto Intze constructed (Intze-2-tank). The container has a diameter of 13 m and is 11 m high. After commissioning of the remote water network between the eastern Harz Mountains and the Elbe in 1965 the tower was functional. 1992 to 1999 that a listed building was restored.
