The Fortaleza de San Miguel was built between 1575 and 1577 by order of Felipe II to protect Garachico from possible pirate attacks. By that time, the town was the commercial capital and main port of the island of Tenerife.
In 1706 the eruption of the volcano buried the bay whose entrance was guarded by the Castillo, the importance of the city ended and the strength of the castle became useless.
Today the fort is used for cultural activities of the town and houses a Heritage Information Centre. It is listed in the monument category as a Site of Cultural Interest since 1985.
