This simple sign marks the site of the camp for Civilian Conservation Corps Company 4448. One can see the remains of sidewalks, as well as an old water tower. We were there for a geocaching event, and park volunteers told me this was the site of the camp that built the park and that the old water tower was left over from those days. A 2009 web article about the camp can be found at (visit link)

The sign reads:

"Civilian Conservation Corps

This site was the location of Company 4448, Camp Alabama SP-12, of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The camp was one of more than 2,650 created throughout the United States to provide jobs and training for young, single men who were unemployed during a time of severe economic trouble.

President Franklin Roosevelt signed legislation authorizing the CCC on March 31, 1933. This camp opened on August 18, 1935, with 26 men and later grew to house more than 100 in four barracks. The young men took what had been a popular recreation area known as Wright's Mill and turned it into Chewacla State Park by building roads, picnic shelters, cabins, and a 26-acre lake. The park opened in 1939.

The camp closed in 1942 after World War II broke out, reducing the number of young men available for the CCC, and Congress decided to eliminate funding for the program. Most of the structures in the camp were taken apart, except for the water tower, and moved elsewhere, but the work of the CCC remains today, providing recreational opportunities for new generations."
