The bell tower of Chiesa San Giacomo (St. James's Church) rises high above of the rooftops of the historic port of Bari, Italy. While not as popular as the nearby Bari Catheral or the Basilica and tomb of St. Nicholas, this bell tower and its related church are unfotunately often overlooked by visitors as they stroll from the historic Baari district over to the Norman-Swabian Castle across the street.
The St. James bell tower's facade is simple, with smooth shells in white stone. Its Romantic shape is quite distinctive, crowned by a bulbed Baroque cupola. While the tower's unique smooth features stand out on their own, it is the church itself that deserves an inside look.
The church of St. James is beautifully adorned with a multi-colored glazed terracotta tiled floor from 1700, gold-leafed wooden choirs enclosed with grates that allowed nuns to see and not be seen, a polychrome marble main altar from the 18th century, and two marble holy water fonts decorated with dove symbols. Its paintings include those of the Neapolitan artist De Mura, Paolo de Matteis and Ludovico Vaccaro.
