The entire town of Tachileik has grown rapidly in the last several years as tourism has increased across the Thai border, both among Thai and western tourists. There is a casino, golf course and airport here. The church is located in newly developed land in the northeast region of the town.

This tourist information counter is located just across the bridge that spans the Mae Sai River which forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar. Tourists walk across the bridge, passing through Thai Immigration, and the Myanmar Immigration where one must surrender their passport, to be collected when returning. Travel is restricted to this small border town and tourists are not free to travel further or go hiking into the hills.

There is a busy tourist market place immediately beyond the border with a lot of cheap consumer goods, but also some good local craft. The shopping is probably better on the Thai side of the border, however. (This border crossing is the northern most point in the country of Thailand.) This is also a popular place for expatriates to come on their "visa run."

Tachileik also calls itself the "The City of Golden Triangle" and in the past was infamous as a gateway for drugs passing out of this area. There are now prominent signs on the Thai side of the border proclaim the death penalty for drug smuggling. The actually "Golden Triangle," where the countries of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers is actually somewhat south of here. It has become quite a tourist destination in its own right.
