The visitor centre is situated in a stone building in the Elsecar Heritage Centre. This heritage centre is formed from the old Elsecar Colliery Workshops which supported the local colliery. There are shops, tea rooms, Antique centres, The Elsecar Heritage Train, childrens nursery and "Playmania" unit, as well conference and exhibition facilites. Adjacent are two large free car parking areas.
The visitor centre has a comprehensive selection of brochures for visitors with local information about walks, Elsecar park, Elsecar reservoir with bird watching and angling facilities, and other atractions in a wider area, including the local Wentworth Estates.

When the workshops were working the then Earl Fitzwilliam had a private railway station in the workshops which he used to take private parties to the races. The heritage railway now uses the remaining lines.
