The Bahrain World Trade Center is a 240 m (787 ft) high 50-floor twin tower complex located in Manama, Bahrain. Built in 2008 by the architectural firm WS Atkins & Partners, it is the first large-scale building in the world to integrate energy-saving wind turbines into its overall design.
The twin structure currently ranks as the 2nd tallest building in the country and has received several awards from international architectural associations, including:
* The 2006 LEAF (Leading European Architects Forum) Award for Best Use of Technology within a Large Scheme, and
* The Arab Construction World for Sustainable Design Award
The two sail-shaped towers are linked via three skybridges that tie the two “sails” together, each holding a 225kW wind turbine for a total of 675kW wind power production. Each turbine measures 29 m (95 ft) in diameter and is aligned to the North towards the direction of the prevailing wind coming in from Persian Gulf. The sail-shaped towers on either side are designed to funnel wind through the gap thereby providing an accelerated wind movement through its turbines: any wind coming within a 45° angle to either side of the central axis will create a wind stream perpendicular to the turbines, thereby maximizing any power generation potential.
The wind turbines provide 11% to 15% of the towers' total power consumption -- equivalent to providing power to approx. 300 homes -- and are expected to run around 50% of the time on any given day.
