The Baiyoke Tower II is truly a landmark in downtown Bangkok, Thailand, towering nearly 1,000 feet. It is the tallest building in the country, although plans for a taller building in the city of Pattaya may eclipse that, if the building is completed.

The unique aspect of this building is that it is a hotel rather than on office building or residential building. This makes it the tallest hotel in S.E. Asia, and one of the tallest hotels in the world.

The rooms are luxurious and there are a number of different restaurants at various levels.

Of course the views from here are fabulous, but one has to peer through Bangkok's smog. There is a free observation deck on the 77th floor which contains many interesting displays related to the tower and the city. The observation deck on the 84th floor offers a 360-degree revolving view of the city. There is a fee of 300 baht during the day, and 400 baht in the evening.

The immediate area surrounding this hotel is very congested with narrow streets. Even with several people directing traffic in front of the building, walking, or even standing, can be hazardous, with large tour buses negotiating the turns, a stream of taxis along with the rest of the city traffic. There is a large shopping center across the street, and an open-air market comes to life along the other street in the evening. One is immediately immersed in the life of the city.
