Located right at the Corniche (or waterfront road) of the town of Mutrah, Oman, the Muttrah Souq is one of the oldest marketplaces in the Middle East that host an astounding myriad of small independent shops selling everything from household goods to daily wear garments, working shoes, antiques, souvenirs, toys, jewelry, frankincense, perfume oils and spices. You name it, the souk has it.
The market was originally built from simple mud and palm leaves which suited the area's harsh climate conditions just perfectly. Over time, the local municipality renovated and covered the market under modern timber roofing all the while maintaining its chaotic characteristic of a traditional Arab market.
Even with all the modern amenities, the facilities are locally still called "Al Dhalam" ("Darkness" in Arabic) due to its dearth of either ambient or man-made light lighting throughout the crowded stalls and narrow passageways.
