Christopher Columbus (ital. Cristoforo Colombo, span. Cristóbal Colón, port. Cristóvão Colombo, dt. Christoph Kolumbus) (* 1451 (?) in Genua; † 20 May 1506 in Valladolid) was an explorer, navigator, and colonizer. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents.
This monument is located in the gardens of the monastery of La Rabida. The monastery played a crucial role in helping Christopher Columbus called "epic discoverer". Christopher Columbus stayed at the friary two years before his famous first voyage, after learning that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had rejected his request for outfitting an expedition in search of the Indies. With the intervention of the guardian of La Rábida and the confessor to Isabella, Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, he was able to have his proposal heard.
This larger than life sized bronze monument shows a young Columbus, sitting on a rock, holding a rudder and looking westward. The bronze stands on a stone base.
