The Timeball Tower was originally built as a lighthouse in 1849 and converted to a Timeball Tower for mariners to set the ship's chronographers in 1861 when the adjacent observatory was built.
It served as a timeball tower until 1926, when the keeper died and no-one complained of it's absence, as ships where then using radio broadcasts to set their chronographers.
It was restored to working order in 1990.
It's listed on the Victorian Heritage register (

Visit Instructions:
You must, of course, physically visit the waymark. Posting a photo of your visit is good, but try and take a photograph of the site distinct from an existing photo—a different angle, or something overlooked by previous visitors. Include a short description of your visit: was the ball or cannon in use, a popular tourist destination, anything new added, anything changed? Work towards keeping the waymark current.
