In 1872 stichtten monniken van Beuron er op een heuvelrug een abdij, gebouwd in neogotische stijl naar een ontwerp van architect Jean Bethune. Ze bestaat uit een grote kloosterkerk – in een van de twee torens hangt de op twee na grootste klok van België (na Mechelen en Doornik) – en een aantal gebouwen rond een vierkante binnenplaats. De kerk is publiek toegankelijk. Daarnaast is er een gastenverblijf en een ontvangstgebouw met winkels, museumruimte en restaurant.
Er is ook een middelbare school (internaat en externaat) voor jongens en meisjes. De school, Collège Saint Benoît genaamd, werd in 1881 gesticht.
De bibliotheek van de abdij, begonnen vanaf de stichting, herbergt thans circa 400.000 boeken en is op aanvraag consulteerbaar.
De abdij geeft sinds 1884 de Revue Bénédictine uit, wetenschappelijk tijdschrift gewijd aan kerkelijke geschiedenis en literatuur.
In de abdij bevinden zich ook de natuurwetenschappelijke collecties van Dom Grégoire Fournier (1863-1931). Het gaat om rijke collecties op het gebied van geologie, mineralogie, biologie, archeologie en vooral paleontologie. Het Centre Grégoire Fournier is een belangrijk wetenschappelijk museum, dat open staat voor bezoek.
De omgeving van Maredsous is een toeristisch geliefd oord. De uitgestrekte bossen geven gelegenheid tot wandelen, er zijn veel restaurants en campings in de buurt en er is op de voormalige spoorlijn door de vallei een "railbike" die zomer en winter in bedrijf is. In de Vallei van de Molignée bevinden zich ook de ruïnes van de gelijknamige burcht.
Plaatselijke specialiteiten die ook elders verkocht worden, zijn een abdijkaas en een abdijbier. De kaas bevat de naam "Maredsous" slechts als merkna

Built in 1872 by Benedictine monks in a neo-Gothic style, this monastery offers pilgrims and tourists a beautiful architectural ensemble. Take a guided tour of the church and grounds including the gardens, library, cemetery, school and workshops.
Facilities: visitors' centre, cafeteria, souvenir shop and bookshop. Bread, cheese and beer tasting. Signposted walks and nature guide by appointment.
Price: €2.50 per person – free for under 12s – discounted rate for older adults and students
During the spring, summer, autumn, Easter and Christmas school holidays: every day (except Friday) at 2pm and 4pm. Ticket office open from 1pm at the visitors' centre booth.
