One can reach the Northern (Main) Entrance by a short drive up the hill by car or city bus (a Turkish dolmus).
From here one can see the Roman ruins of the city of Hierapolis. The ruins include the Martyrium of St. Philip the Apostle (a cathedral built in the 5th century AD on the site of this apostle's crucifiction/stoning), a 200 BC Roman theatre, and a thermal spring swimming pool among marble columns. Don't miss an exploration of the nearby Necropolis (cemetery) with approx. 1200 extrodinary tombs (sarcophagi) of a variety of sizes and shapes. (When we visited a traditional geocache was hidden among them!)
One can view the naturally terraced travertine pools of Pamukkale from Hierapolis above, or walk barefoot along a path to better explore these calcium-covered cliffs and thier amazing blue water thermal pools. Pammukale means "cotton cliffs" in Turkish, an appropriate moniker for these white limestone cliffs, which are made when water flowing from Hieropolis' hot springs above lose carbon dioxide and leave the white deposits behind.
The southern entrance (N 37° 55.108', E 29° 07.378') is down in the town of Pamukkale. This entrance allows one to reach Hierapolis by foot by walking a path barefoot along the white cliffs to the top of the hill.
