Morne Coubaril is a genuine 18th century St. Lucia Plantation with a working mill and that allows visitors to see the key steps in the making of sugar cane syrup. The sugar cane mill is part of this preserved historical plantation.
A pyramid shaped shingle roof protects a series of three rollers. Sugar cane stalks are hand fed between the rollers, which are rotated by donkey power. The donkey walks in a circle around the mill while connected to a shaft that drives the rollers. The juice from the sugar cane is squeezed out as the cane is crushed. The crushed cane is then fed to the donkey as a reward.
Thirty minute tours of Morne Coubaril are offered daily and cost $7. U.S. currency.
