Visitors to the historic town of
Port Gamble are inundated with historical elements throughout the township. Almost every building in this town contains a historical marker that highlights the history of prior occupants of each residence or building. Each marker stands out nicely on painted burgundy boards and gold lettering. This grindstone, located in front of the
Port Gamble Historical Museum has a plaque in front that reads:
GRINDSTONE This grindstone was used in the mill until 1895 when it was given to Knute O. Vaa by Cyrus Walker when Knute retired. It was then donated by Edwin Vaa at the time of his father's death. |
The mill that this marker is referring to was the Pope and Talbot Mill which operated from 1853 to 1995 and was the longest continuously operating mill town in North America until it closed. This former mill town's many homes and businesses are owned by Pope Resources and maintained by Olympic Property Group and many of the homes homes and buildings are available for rent/lease throughout the year.
