The stave church of Heddal is the largest and most famous stave church of Norway. A MUST SEE if you are in this area.
It is also a Norwegian Cultural Heritage Site.

The Heddal Stavechurch is the largest and most famous stave church in Norway. It was build in the 13th century.
The Heddal Stavechurch is one of the most beautiful ones also. It's not only large, it has quite a lot of woodcarvings. Service is not often at this church. It's a large tourist attraction. For openingtimes see: (

Once there have been about 750 stave churches all over Norway. But only 33 left. Because they are out of timber, quite a lot of them burned down by accident, some of them also during the pest-age because of superstition.

There is a small fee fot the entrance - you can buy tickets at the little cafe nearby.
Parking is just about 300 meters west of the church.
