The hotel opened in the first year of the 20th Century, in part of the former Convent of São João de Deus, a religious institution which was active since the 17th Century.
Some renovation works are planned, aiming at an upgrade of the starts rating of the hotel.
The building is impressive, offering immediately a vintage feeling to the casual observer.The surroundings - which were once part of the same convent - play their role. There is a beautiful public garden just in front of the hotel; by its side, the church; and behind, the remaining structures of the former convent, quite decadent, hosting a museum.
