The dam was build in the years 1908 to 1914 to accumulate the water from the small river Eder. It was build just before First World War.
The dam is about 400 meters long and 48 meters high. It's build by using about 300.000 m^3 of concrete and steel.
Today the dam is open for pedestrians. It's not open for cars anymore.
The dam was errected for the accumulation/storage of water. It's still the aim of Edersee to spend water to secure the possibilities of shipping on the upper part of river Weser. Thatfor it looses a lot of water during dry summers, so the upper part of lake Edersee falls dry and some of the remains from the old overflooded villages show up again. There is for example an old graveyard, some walls of old buildings and the old bridge of Asel which can be visited or seen at low water.
The water is also used in a small hydroelectric powerplant.
The dam was destroyed in World War II by an british bombing. It caused a big flooding and destruction of some villages, streets and trainlines along the river Eder. After WW II the dam was rebuild.
