The Municipal Electricity Building was built 1911-1912 as the headquarters for the Invercargill Electric Tramways Corporation. The building was originally a single story building with the second added around 1920. The company with the adjacent trambarn and powerhouse operated an electric tramway (street car) network radiating from this location. Besides operating the tramway the company provided dependable electrical power for street lights and domestic consumption. This early electricity provided greatly to the development of businesses in Invercargill. Over time other communities in the area also were supplied power operated from this location. With the increased use of the automobile the use of the tramway decreased. The tramway operated until 1952 even though it was a loss for the last several years.
