Sir Stamford Raffles (1781 –1826) was a British statesman, best known for his founding of the city of Singapore. He is often described as the "Father of Singapore" He was also an amateur writer and wrote a book entitled History of Java (1817). (visit link)

The original bronze statue of Sir Stamford Raffles was sculpted by English sculptor Thomas Woolner. The statue showing Raffles in a meditative pose with his arms folded was officially unveiled by the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld on 27 June 1887 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. The polymarble replica erected in 1972 was made from plaster casts from the original 1887 figure. It stands on the Singapore River promenade at the end of Old Parliament Lane. It marks Sir Stamford Raffles’ landing site along the Singapore River. This site offers visitors a panoramic view of Boat Quay and the Raffles Place skyline. (visit link)
