Male/Female is a huge shape of a man cut out of aluminium sheet, with the smaller shape of a woman cut out from it. The structure is about nine meters tall, with a material thickness of about five cm. It symbolizes the antagonistic relationship between Male and Female, each being the negative counterpart of each other, and both are needed to form a whole. According to Borofsky, each of us has both male and female qualities contributing to our overall personality, and we need to acknowledge this in order to fully understand ourselves.
The impressive silhouette was purchased by the Bielefeld Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) for their 150th anniversary in 1999 and is located in front of their office building.

Male/Female ist eine riesige, aus einer ca. 5 cm dicken Aluminiumplatte ausgeschnittene Form eines Mannes, aus der wiederum eine kleinere, weibliche Form herausgeschnitten oder -gestanzt ist. Die Figur ist rund neun Meter hoch und symbolisiert die antagonistische Beziehung zwischen Mann und Frau, die jeweils das negative Gegenstück zueinander darstellen, aber nur in der komplementären Ergänzung miteinander ganz werden. Folgt man Borofsky, so hat jeder von uns sowohl männliche als auch weibliche persönlichkeitsformende Eigenschaften, und nur wenn wir das anerkennen und akzeptieren, können wir zu einem tieferen Verständnis unserer selbst gelangen.
The imponierende Silhouette wurde aus Anlass des 150jährigen Jubiläums der Bielefelder IHK (Industrie- und Handelskammer) 1999 von dieser erworben vor ihrem Bürogebäude aufgestellt.
