Hrabyne World War II Monument and Museum
The Monument of the Second World War in Hrabyne is located next to the main road I/11 to Ostrava. One of the exhibitions of the Silesian Provincial Museum is situated here. The Second World War exhibition captures the period from 1935 when the building of the fortification system began in the Czechoslovakia, through the Munich Agreement and the German army invasion of the Czechoslovakia. Special attention is paid to the participation of the Czechoslovak soldiers and civilians in the battles in all the lines until the liberation of the republic. The exhibition called Czechoslovak Pilots in Fight for Freedom 1939-1945 documents the period from the spring 1939 when the first Czechoslovak pilots started to leave for Poland, their journey to France, Great Britain, the local battles, and the formation of the Czechoslovak Air Force in the Soviet Union and the liberation of the Ostrava Region in which the pilots took part during the Ostrava Operation. A part of the premises is also a symbolic cemetery with 13,000 scutcheons with the names of the Soviet soldiers and the members of the Czechoslovak troops who fell during the Ostrava Operation, the names of the inhabitants of the Silesia and the North Moravia who were killed, tortured to death or executed in the concentration camps, as well as the names of the American pilots who were shot down above the Silesia during the air attacks in 1944.
