The Zwehrenturm is a medieval city gate and one of the few remainders of the old Kassel city walls, erected in 1330. In those days, city gates - like donjons - often served as prisons, and this was no exception. Back then, there were seperate prisons for different social classes and this one was reserved for the higher ranks, but still it was no place you'd choose to stay for your holidays. In an inventory from 1612, there's only two benches, one table and one small furnace, and a rack from the place is said to be kept in the storeroom of Hesse State Museum. How long the tower has been used as a prison is not quite clear, but since 1779 it has been conjoined with the adjacent Museum Fridericianum, so the prison days must have been over by then. Today, the top floor is the site of the Laserscape Kassel laserbeam installation, while the rest of the building is integrated into the Documenta exhibition rooms.

Der Zwehrenturm ist ein 1330 erbautes mittelalterliches Stadttor und gehört zu den wenigen erhaltenen Resten der alten Kasseler Stadtbefestigung. Damals war es üblich, dass Stadttore - ähnlich wie Bergfriede - als Gefängnis genutzt wurden, und der Zwehrenturm machte da keine Ausnahme. Auch wenn er den höheren Ständen vorbehalten war - es gab damals getrennte Gefängnisse für die verschiedenen Gesellschaftsschichten - so war es doch sicher kein Ort, wo man seinen Urlaub verbringen möchte. Eine Inventarliste von 1612 verzeichnet als Ausstattung lediglich zwei Bänke, einen Tisch und einen kleinen Ofen, und eine Folterbank von hier soll sich im Archiv des Hessischen Landesmuseums befinden. Wie lange der Turm als Knast genutzt wurde ist nicht ganz klar, da er aber 1779 mit dem angrenzenden Museum Fridericianum verbunden wurde, muss diese Zeit spätestens dann zuende gewesen sein. Heute befindet sich im Obergeschoss die Laserscape Kassel Laserstrahlinstallation, während der Rest des Gebäudes als Documenta-Ausstellungsfläche genutzt wird.
