The Bielefeld coat of arms can be traced back to 1263, and though some details of the design have changed over time, the basic elements have always been the same. These are a gate with two towers on top, and in the opening of the gate a small shield with two chevrons (in German: "Sparren") - the symbol of the Counts of Ravensberg, who founded the town about 1214, made it their capitol and took residence in the newly built Sparrenburg Castle on a hill overlooking the town. With the towered gate representing a castle, the interpretation is quite straightforward: The place with the castle of the Counts of Ravensberg - and that's just what Bielefeld was.
The coat of arms is carved into the wall of the New Town Hall, facing the inner town hall yard between the old and new structures of the building.
