Luis Carlos Lopez (1883-1950) wrote about his city, and one of his well-known poems compares Cartagena to a pair of old shoes, which are well worn but familiar and comfortable.

Except for short periods during which he served in minor consular posts in Munich and Baltimore, López spent his entire life in Cartagena. His acute observations of the provincial society in which he lived have made him one of the most respected regional writers in South American literature. His major works are De mi villorio (1908; “Of My Village”), Posturas dificiles (1909; “Difficult Situations”), and Por el atajo (1928; “For the Short-Cut”).

Los Zapatos Viejos (Old Shoes) is a sculpture made by Hector Lombana a Colombian sculptor, painter, and architect from Riofrío. Luis Carlos Lopez's poem is written on a plaque in front of the old shoes.

Before its current localization behind San Felipe Castle, the monument was placed near Getsemaní neighborhood from where it was moved because of the construction of Heredia bridge. Our pictures were taken from the old location but the coordinates are from the new one.
