Lake Matheson is one of the most scenic view in New Zealand. It attacts many photographers, artists and tourists. We happened to be there on a perfect day, early in the morning before the clouds rolled in. The view of Mt Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand at 3754 m, 12316 ft is center right and Mt Tasman, the second highest at 3497 11473, is center right. The mountain wall is about 24 km from Lake Matheson and the peaks are about 4 km apart. These are spectacular glaciated mountains.
The 1/2 penny stamp is the first of the Peace Series issued in 1946 to commemorate the end of World War II. There are several scenic viewpoints around the lake. Both the stamp and photo picture are from the best viewpoint at the far end of the lake. Both captured the clear view view formed by the trees and reflected in the calm water.
