The library was built beginning in 1876 and completed 1877. The building was designed by the Invercargill architect F.W. Burwell who also designed the adjacent former courthouse. The building is constructed of local schist stone and is in a similar style as the adjoining courthouse. The building has arched windows and entry ways. The building has now been converted to serve as a citizen advice bureau.
