Founded about 1228 there is a long and changing history of this monastery, full of wars and moves of the sisters. 1829 the monastery started educating girls, a tradition which continued until today.
The monastery got famous with Edith Stein (born: October 12, 1891 – died: August 9, 1942), who was a teacher there from 1923 to 1931. She was a Roman Catholic philosopher and nun from Jewish origin, regarded as a martyr and saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Her name in Speyer was Saint Teresia Benedicta of the Cross. She died in Auschwitz concentration camp. There is a memorial place in this monastery which can be visited.
Das Kloster wurde gegen 1228 gegründet und hatte eine lange, wechselvolle Geschichte voller Kriege und Umzüge. Seit 1829 gibt es hier eine Klosterschule für Mädchen. Berühmt ist das Kloster durch Edith Stein (1891-1942), die hier von 1923 bis 1931 Lehrerin war. Sie war Philosophin, Nonne und Märtyrin der katholischen Kirche unter dem Ordensnamen Teresia Benedicta a Cruce. Aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Herkunft starb die im KZ Auschwitz. Im Kloster gibt es heute eine Gedenkstätte zu besichtigen.
