This church was built within the original Arab walls and had almost certainly been a mosque by then. It was consecrated as a church by the Bishop of Évora after Christanity was established in Elvas.
In 1271, during the reign of Dom Afonso III it was definitely part of the Crown properties. Later, king Dom Dinis offered the church to the Order of Avis. Several changes in the building were executed in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
It is usually open for visiting.
